The holidays are right around the corner. Soon, you might visit with family and hear the regular questions, “How have you been?” and “What’s new with you?”
If you’re facing an unexpected pregnancy, those questions might hit differently than they used to when not much was new.
Here are a few tips for navigating the holidays:
Set Healthy Boundaries
Even though your relatives might ask pointed questions, set your boundaries beforehand. What are you comfortable sharing? What do you not feel ready to share?
If you are ready to share freely, then go ahead. The timing is up to you. If you are not prepared, remember that just because someone asks you a question doesn’t mean you have to divulge all your personal information.
Without being dishonest, you can share something new that’s less significant than your pregnancy. You can also politely change the subject or bring another relative into the conversation.
Does anyone at the gathering know your situation? Share your boundaries with them so they don’t tell others your news before you’re ready. They can also help you out if you feel stuck in a conversation.
Make Changes to Your Gathering Size
It’s never mentally healthy to self-isolate when you face challenges. Connection and community are essential for your emotional well-being. You need a support system.
If you are further along in your pregnancy and are showing but do not want to tell your relatives the news yet, see if you can opt for a smaller gathering. Try celebrating on another date with your closest, immediate family and friends this year instead.
Give Yourself Grace
Pregnancy can be emotionally and physically challenging, especially when unexpected.
Give yourself grace, practice self-care, and enjoy the holiday season. Rest and relax, and enjoy time with your loved ones.
