Types of Abortion

Medication Abortion

Also known as the abortion pill, medication abortion involves taking a series of two drugs to terminate and expel the pregnancy. The first drug, mifepristone is often taken at the doctor’s office, and the second drug, misoprostol, is taken at home at least 24 hours later.

Medication abortion is only FDA-approved for women up to ten weeks pregnant. After this, a surgical abortion would be needed. According to the Mayo Clinic, the potential risks to medication abortion include:

  • Incomplete abortion – may need to be followed by surgical abortion
  • Heavy/prolonged bleeding
  • Digestive system discomfort
  • Infection
  • Fever

Surgical Abortion

The surgical abortion process is more invasive, involving anesthesia and surgery. Abortion methods differ depending on how far along the pregnancy is. Each surgical procedure involves removing the pregnancy through the vagina.

There are also serious potential risks to surgical abortion. These risks include:

  • Damage to the womb or cervix
  • Uterine perforation (accidentally putting a hole in the uterus with one of the instruments used)
  • Excessive bleeding
  • Infection of the uterus or fallopian tubes
  • Scarring of the inside of the uterus
  • Not removing all of the tissue, requiring another procedure

Confirm to Know Your Abortion Options

First, confirm your pregnancy with lab-quality pregnancy testing and ultrasound to understand the details of your pregnancy. It’s important to have an ultrasound early in pregnancy to determine how far along you are, if your pregnancy is viable, and the location of your pregnancy.

An ultrasound will help confirm any pregnancy complications like miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy (this happens when the pregnancy is growing outside the uterus). Your partner can’t force you to have an abortion either.

Your friends may be well-meaning and you may think they have your best interests at heart, but know that you will be the one who has to live with whatever decision you make. Be sure that this is your choice and that you have all the information you need.
