A missed period pill is another name for the abortion pill regimen, and it can result in an abortion if the woman taking it is pregnant.
What Is a Missed Period Pill (MPP)?
With the overturn of Roe v. Wade and certain states passing laws to limit when a woman can receive an abortion, some have considered the concept of missed period pills.
This concept involves providing women with medical abortion drugs (mifepristone and misoprostol) to have on hand for when they miss their periods.
This means a woman wouldn’t know whether she is pregnant before taking the pill, but the drugs would take effect anyway. Mifepristone would end the pregnancy if one exists, and misoprostol would trigger uterine contractions and vaginal bleeding.
Are Missed Period Pills FDA-Approved?
While obtaining abortion drugs before pregnancy is available in certain states, it does not mean this is an FDA-approved practice. The FDA disapproves of mifepristone as an advance provision for pregnancy.
The FDA has expressed concerns about the timing of the pills and the lack of monitoring. Mifepristone is only FDA-approved for the first 70 days of pregnancy. Taking abortion pills without first accurately dating a pregnancy could lead to risks associated with taking the drugs outside the approved timeframe.
Screening for ectopic pregnancy would not happen in the case of missed period pills, which means the life-threatening condition could progress undetected. Since an ectopic pregnancy implants outside the uterus, abortion pills will not effectively treat it.
Missed abortion pills are also 100% self-administered and would lack appropriate medical oversight to ensure a woman’s safety.
