Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) result from sexually transmitted infections caused by bacteria, viruses, or parasites. They are contagious and spread mainly through sexual contact.

However, STDs can also pass from person to person through blood and other bodily fluids.

Why Should I Get Tested?

If you are sexually active, getting tested for STDs is essential even if you aren’t showing any signs or symptoms. This is because many STDs don’t present with symptoms right away, so it’s possible that you or your sexual partner can seem healthy but unknowingly have an STD.

And for certain STDs, the longer they go untreated, the more likely they are to cause health complications, which can include:

  • Pelvic pain
  • Pregnancy complications
  • Eye inflammation
  • Arthritis
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
  • Infertility
  • Heart disease
  • Certain cancers, such as HPV-associated cervical and rectal cancers

The sooner you learn about an STD, the quicker you can receive treatment and potentially prevent lasting effects.

How Are STDs Treated?

Many STDs are curable with the correct treatment. For example, STDs that are caused by bacteria or parasites, such as gonorrhea, syphilis, chlamydia, and trichomoniasis, can be treated with an antibiotic.

However, other STDs like herpes or HIV can’t be fully cured but can be managed with antiviral drugs instead.

STDs and Pregnancy

If you’re pregnant, getting tested for STDs and starting immediate treatment, if needed, is essential. STDs can pass from mother to baby during birth and cause serious, sometimes fatal, complications.
